If you are considering a trans-Atlantic repositioning cruise, stick this reminder note in your planning file: In spring and fall, in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun rises and sets on the south side of the ship. The closer you are to winter, the farther south the sun gets.
That’s particularly important if you are booking a balcony cabin, and you want the warmth of the sun while crossing the Atlantic. Fall and spring temperatures, typically in the 60s and 70s, feel warmer when you are sitting in the sunshine.
Cabin balconies on the south – the port (or left) side west-bound and starboard (or right) side east-bound – will see the sun from rise to set.
If you prefer shadows, book your cabin balcony on the north side of the ship.
